Archie Bell and the Drells - “(There’s Gonna Be A)Showdown” from 1969’s “Showdown” LP released on Atlantic

Long before DJ Screw was making hip hop sound like it drank some syzzurp Archie Bell and the Drells were holding down the music scene in Houston.  The jam above is his “biggest” hit, and it’s a shame this didn’t go bigger.  Don’t hit play if you don’t want a to be threatened with a dance-off.

Victor Uwaifo and the Titibitis - “You Are My Fire Extinguisher”

I sort of wonder if Fela’s main rhythm guitar player for the bulk of his time with Afrika 70, Okalu Ojeah, didn’t play with Mr. Uwaifo earlier in his career - note the “Zombie”-esque groove and chunk on the rhythm guitar part here…

This is what Raekwon, Ghostface, Killa Kobe and Jim Jones think “Rock and Roll” is.

So!  This is a new blog I’ve put together so I can give all of your iTunes libraries a little love.  Look to this space once a day or so for some burners.

Today - it is almost 60 degrees.  I’m newly single on this February 14th and so, to celebrate my lust for life and also warm weather, I give you Sister Nancy’s “Ain’t No Stopping Nancy”.

A little about Sister Nancy - Jamaica’s first lady MC, now a banker in North Jersey.  Her voice teeters on the edge of in tune, but her flow and her band’s groove kill it.

namaste,
